LA LA Land

Spencer and Jennifer met in west LA in January of 2023. He loved the Kansas State Wildcats and eating ghormeh sabzi, an easy walk around his neighborhood of Little Tehran. She loved getting brunch in Venice and taking small sips of mimosas after CrossFit on Saturdays.

It seemed like they had nothing in common.

A few months later, Spencer found himself to be her plus one at a wedding in Irvine. A few months after that, they were on a trip around the Amalfi Coast together over the summer. The next thing he knew, he was learning to ski in Lake Louise and then going down black diamonds in Niseko.

Jennifer always thought that being in love was like having butterflies in her chest — the thump thump thumping of her heart anxiously beating away. She came to realize with Spencer that love was a heavy blanket, the feeling of security and sleeping well at night. She had never met anyone quite like Spencer - someone who made her laugh but also knew how to calm her down when she was bursting with frustration. While watching him kindle a fire in Banff, she thought to herself — finally she had found her dragon whisperer.

The months went by too fast. They were always in the trenches of work, and in between trying to see family, friends, new places and people. One day, Spencer told Jen they would be going to a work dinner in Santa Monica. He sent her a photo of the email confirming dinner time (7 pm) and place (Terraza). They arrived and began walking towards the Santa Monica pier, when he turned to her and said “I’ll never lie to you again — but there is no work dinner.” He pulled out a crumpled paper piece from his pocket and revealed a heart-shaped diamond ring.

It was the easiest yes of her life.
